A fine quality early Victorian coromandel writing slope with superb engraved brass decoration c.1860. The figured coromandel veneered exterior with sloping front, the corners mounted with brass decoration secured by brass studs, each with matching engraving. The lock set to the centre of the large clasp design decoration to match the corners. The sloping front folding forward and the rear section folding back to reveal a superb original fitted interior. Pen and ink compartments to the rear with gilt brass fittings, decoration and ink well tops. The sloping surface with tooled leather, the rear half opening to reveal an internal compartment for storing paper and envelopes. Bears the name for top quality London maker, Betjemann's to the lock. Presented in immaculate condition with a deep shine and original patina. Measures 14" wide x 10" deep closed or 20" deep when open x 4.5"maximum height. Stock number 38888.
