Description

A fine quality mid Victorian figured mahogany stick barometer by Hewitson of Newcastle, in superb fully working condition c.1860. Cushion moulded pediment to the top with glazed window below to the barometer scales. The bone scales sat at an angle with remote action vernier markers for today and yesterday located at each side, plus mercury action barometer tube set to the centre. Slim figured mahogany trunk below with moulded edge and thermometer box. Matching bone scale reading in Fahrenheit and Reaumur to the original mercury action thermometer. Circular base containing the cistern with matching turned cover. Bears the makers name Hewitson, Newcastle recorded as trading at 76 Grey Street between 1855 & 1875. This example presented in superb original condition with a rich colour and patina; the movement fully overhauled and working.  Measures 38" long x 5" wide at the pediment x 2.5" trunk width x 2.5" maximum depth.
